Terri Merkley's Biography

A long, long time ago, in a state (not too) far away, I was born. I lived in Golden, Colorado, surrounded by grandparents and aunts and uncles and a passel of cousins. It is incontestable that I had the perfect growing-up life! At age 12 my family moved to Ely, Nevada, and then to Salt Lake City, Utah.

After graduating from high school and attending the University of Utah I accepted a job transfer to Boston, Massachusetts. One year later my husband, Burt (whom I met at the Catholic Newman Center on the University of Utah campus), proposed to me over the phone and mailed (yes, mailed!) my engagement ring to me. We were married in October 1979 in Colorado, and he moved to Boston to be closer to me. :-)

Our first child was born while we were living in Massachusetts, and it didn’t take too many months before I realized two things: 1) I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom and; 2) we wanted to be closer to family. I quit my job in Boston and we moved back to Salt Lake City.

Our second and third children were born in Salt Lake City. We were members of St. Thomas More Parish at its inception. After my parents “retired” and moved to Cascade, Idaho, we determined we needed to move again so our children would grow up around grandparents.

Burt accepted a position at Albertsons in Boise, and we moved and settled in southeast Boise.  Our oldest child started at St Joseph’s School, and two more children were born. We did our part to fill the openings at St. Joe’s and Bishop Kelly! Thanks be to God it has been a wonderful life in this wonderful city!!! Our five children are now grown and off exploring the world.

I started working as the receptionist at St John’s in September 2006; I will always be grateful to Fr. Henry and Bobbi Dominick for hiring me (without pertinent experience or skills) and allowing me to enjoy this beautiful work at the Cathedral.

I love everything outdoors: gardening and hiking and camping and playing in the river! I love animals, and we have always shared our home with pets. I love reading (especially biographies) and taking road trips, and my neighbors and my church family!
