Sacramental Preparation

Thank you for registering your child for Sacramental Preparation at the Cathedral Parish of St. John the Evangelist.  On behalf of myself, your Director of Religious Education, our rector, Fr. Gerald Funke, and our vicar Fr. Antonio Eguiguren, OFM, we wish to warmly welcome you and invite you to actively join us in our efforts to help you prepare your children to receive Christ’s body, blood, soul and divinity for the first time.

What is Sacramental Preparation?

At the Cathedral Parish of St. John the Evangelist, Sacramental preparation consists of the formal instruction and catechesis of our parish children ages 7+ in the two Sacraments of Healing: Reconciliation (Confession) and Eucharist in a parish setting.  Children will be prepared first to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and then their preparation will continue with preparation for reception of the Eucharist.  The year of preparation begins in the Fall each year and concludes with the celebration of First Communion in the Spring.  The overall objective is to foster a deeper love of Christ that will allow these children to fully participate in the mass and receive the abundant graces our Lord wishes to bestow on those who come forward to receive Him at Communion.

Who must enroll in Sacramental Preparation?

Parish children who are entering the 2nd grade or already 7 years of age, validly baptized, and not currently enrolled in Catholic school, are required to participate in parish based sacramental preparation- this includes our home schooling families.

When is instruction offered?

There are currently 2 options for Sacramental Preparation at our parish:

  • Most Sundays (September- April) from 11:15am- 12:30pm
  • 2 Tuesday evenings a month from 6:00pm-7:30pm (Parent & Child instruction)

Parent/Guardian Expectations:

  • Parents/guardians of children who are enrolled in Sacramental Preparation are expected to be attending Sunday mass regularly as weekly attendance of mass and the instruction they receive at home are the primary places children will learn about the Eucharist.
  • Parents/guardians should be assisting their children with the memorization of the traditional Catholic prayers: Sign of the Cross, Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be & an Act of Contrition.
  • Parents/guardians who have children enrolled in the Sunday 11:15am-12:30pm classes will be required to attend 1 adult class on Reconciliation and 1 class on Eucharist.  Tuesday evening classes are parent and child so this requirement is eliminated for them.
  • Parents/guardians and their child(ren) will be required to attend 1 retreat on Reconciliation and 1 retreat on Eucharist at the Cathedral (schedule TBD).

Parish Expectations:

  • Parents/guardians of children enrolled in Sacramental preparation at the cathedral parish can expect that every effort will be made to ensure that children will receive quality catechesis that engages the various needs of the children entrusted to them.
  • Parents/guardians of children enrolled in our program will find willing support and assistance from the Director of Religious education and the catechetical team including our parish priests.  Additional resources for instruction are available to help parents/guardians in their mission as the main catechists of their children.  Please do not hesitate to contact the DRE (Director of Religious Education) for individualized assistance in the preparation of your children.  We know that parish based catechesis, when done well, is not a one size fits all approach.  We are here to help and support our parish families to the best of our abilities.

Finally…

Sacramental Preparation is a big job for us as parents and as a parish community.  However, working closely together, we can accomplish this great task which will bear abundant fruit for Christ and His kingdom.
